After exploring the Great Lakes region in Ontario, including the vast Lake Superior, and after three years discovering Montreal and Quebec, it’s time for us to embark on the journey crossing Canada from East to West to reach Alberta. This is a territory that has captivated our dreams for years. We are eager to discover what surprises and adventures await us! Our first goal: the Canadian Rockies!

Monday, May 30 to Thursday, June 2, 2022

One thing is certain: the Canadian West must be earned! Crossing Canada from East to West by car from Ontario means four days on the road. Three Canadian provinces, two time zones, and, most of all, endless kilometers of highway. We go from a muddy country road where we camped to the legendary Trans-Canada Highway… in the rain!

Thus, from the city of Thunder Bay, the first day of driving is in heavy rain. After a few hours on the road, we change time zones, giving us an extra hour in our day! And by the end of the day, still in the rain, we leave Ontario and enter the neighboring province of Manitoba.

After this long day of driving in the rain, we set up camp by a lake for the night. The place is nice, but we don’t set up the tent, as rain and strong winds are expected overnight.

The next day, we’re on the road before 8 a.m.! That’s what happens when you don’t have to pack up the tent! It’s raining (again), so we stop at Tim Hortons for breakfast, warm and sheltered from the wind. We love their muffins… and also their Wi-Fi! In the morning, we reach a crucial point of our drive crossing Canada from East to West: the center of the country! I brave a strong wind that almost sweeps me away to capture the moment.

Late in the morning, we reach the big city nearby and the capital of Manitoba: Winnipeg. We drive through it without stopping and take a few pictures on the go.

The rest of the day is spent searching for a campsite to take a shower and enduring a relentless windstorm. At least it has the advantage of clearing the clouds. However, the wind is blowing sideways. We have to hold onto the Jeep tightly! Fuel consumption spikes to 18 L/100 km, unheard of! (We usually average between 13 and 14). Our rolling brick doesn’t like the wind, and aerodynamically, it’s not great! We spend long hours on a straight highway, to the point where even the slightest curve is announced by a sign! The railway runs alongside the highway, giving us the chance to cross or overtake freight trains several kilometers long.

Summary of the day: nearly 600 km traveled (370 miles), 4 campgrounds checked for a shower, without success, the center of Canada crossed, a new time zone change, and entry into a new Canadian province: Saskatchewan. A full day!

We spend the evening in a village rest area, enduring strong winds. The evening is marked by solving a mystery: we kept hearing a sound similar to a lawnmower trying to start before abruptly stopping. After hearing this sound in three different places, including deep in the woods, we started to doubt it was a lawnmower… The mystery is now solved: it was actually a large species of grouse that seems to be performing its mating display 😂

For the first time, we take refuge in the car to eat in warmth. Once again, we spend the night in the car to shield ourselves from the strong gusts. After rain and then wind, we’re hoping for good weather tomorrow at last!! 🤞

Wish granted! We wake up to a bright blue sky full of promise and, best of all, no wind. It’s pure joy to have breakfast in the sun after these past few days of bad weather.

In the nearby town of Wawota, a surprise awaits us: a scalding hot shower in a park! We meet a local resident who admires the Jeep and our project. He also advises us to fill up on water. He insists on taking our photo, not even giving us time to tidy up a bit! 😉

We then set out to explore Saskatchewan, the ‘breadbasket of Canada.’ We take secondary roads and paths to better appreciate its grandeur and beauty. This province offers us vast expanses on either side of a straight road swept by winds. Fields not yet seeded, bright green prairies, pastures, and wild plains, all as far as the eye can see. We are amazed by this vastness. Agricultural operations, each served by the railway, grain silos, and oil extraction wells follow one after the other. A very agricultural face of Canada, exploiting its lands and resources without limit.

To our great delight, we spot numerous wild animals that still inhabit these vast plains and prairies. Many prairie dogs stand on their hind legs by the roadside. ‘What is that? A deer? No, it’s a reindeer! No, it’s not! I’ll look it up on the internet later.’ After researching, they turn out to be pronghorn antelopes. We even see a coyote catch and devour a prairie dog right in front of us.
Late in the morning, after taking secondary roads and carefully avoiding prairie dogs, who have the habit of crossing the road at the worst possible moments, we arrive in Alberta, the province marking the end of our drive across the Canadian Great Plains!

After a stop for groceries and Wi-Fi in the nearby big city, Medicine Hat (what a funny name!), we hit the road again, heading straight West! We scan the horizon, eager to see them for the first time. It’s after two hours of driving, and at the cost of a truck speeding by and leaving a nice rock chip on the windshield 😒, that they start to stand out against the brilliant blue sky: the Canadian Rockies! We are deeply moved to see them for the first time, something we had dreamed of for so long.

We find a spot by a dam lake, where we can admire the mountains in peace all evening. Facing this magnificent landscape, we are beyond excited! After four days of driving and over 2000 km traveled (1200 miles), crossing Canada from East to West by car was a journey, but we are finally at the foot of the Rocky Mountains! Tomorrow, we’ll hit the road to venture into the heart of the mountains and discover our first Rocky Mountain National Park: Waterton Lakes National Park, which already promises some wonderful surprises! 🐻

From the beautiful Bruce Peninsula National Park and its clear waters, we continue our journey westward across Canada and arrive on the shores of Lake Superior. We thought Lake Ontario, Lake Erie, and Lake Huron were immense? They’re small fry compared to Lake Superior, the largest freshwater lake in the world!

Wednesday, May 25, and Thursday, May 26, 2022

Over the next two days, a lot of driving awaits us to reach the eastern shore of Lake Superior from Lake Huron. Before leaving, we climb to the top of the hill overlooking Elliot Lake, where there is a fire lookout tower. At the top, surprise: Wi-Fi! And quite good, actually 😏. We were supposed to spend 5 minutes admiring the view, but we end up staying there for 2.5 hours working! As far as offices with a view go, this one is pretty great.

And so, we set off for an afternoon of driving! We rack up the kilometers on the Trans-Canada Highway, which crosses Canada from East to West, amid huge trucks overtaking us at high speed and long straight stretches. The wild landscape surrounding us is awe-inspiring. We knew Canada was a vast country, but facing these endless roads and boundless nature, we truly grasp its magnitude. On the GPS, the territory stretching to the North is immense. As we cross the country from East to West, we thought we were covering a significant portion! Far from it! In reality, we are traversing only a tiny fraction.

Lake Superior is known to be unpredictable: rain and fog can appear at any moment. We experience this firsthand. As soon as we catch a glimpse of it around a bend, the rain starts to fall. Light at first, then heavy. We finish the drive to our evening spot under intermittent rain. The night promises to be damp! We find a free campsite by the shores of Lake Superior. After Lake Ontario, then Erie, then Huron, we are used to the Great Lakes. But Lake Superior is on another level. In the evening mist, we admire its endless expanse.

And indeed, the night was restless. The previous day’s rain turned into a full-blown storm, and the wind blew very hard. Constantly on alert in the rooftop tent, we slept poorly, and the 6:30 am wake-up is a bit rough. We hit the road again under a light rain and a mysterious mist. Despite the unpredictable weather, it does give the landscape a certain charm.

As we make our way along the shores of Lake Superior, we realize that here, nature hasn’t yet gone ‘poof!’ We call ‘poof!’ the moment when, over the course of two or three days, the trees burst into green. Here, the maple trees are barely budding. It feels like we’ve gone back in time by a whole month. We stop at Agawa Rock in a small provincial park that offers a glimpse of ancient pictograms. It seems to be closed, but we venture in anyway, cautiously, as signs warning of ‘deadly danger’ line the path due to very slippery cliffs in rainy weather. Not very reassuring, especially since it’s pouring rain!

We have a quick picnic in the sun, and then it’s time to retrace our steps back. Less focused on the surroundings and more on the trail, we complete the return trip in 2 hours and 20 minutes, compared to the 3 hours and 30 minutes it took us on the way there, quite a performance!”

We find a wild campsite on a beach by the river. The highway isn’t far, but the setting is still pleasant. We spend the evening in the company of a colony of pelicans, which keep coming and going on the river. They do everything simultaneously, it’s quite amusing: they take off together, they land together, they go upstream together, and they all dive to fish at the same time, so all you see are their backsides! We spend the evening watching them; it’s even better than TV. 😀

Once again, up at 6 am.
And long, it is! The first 6 kilometers are on a relatively flat and easy trail. We progress quickly. The next 3 kilometers take us up the cliff, a steep climb that leaves our legs aching. Finally, the last 2 kilometers lead us to the viewpoint overlooking the gorges. We are exhausted, soaked to the bone, starving, but in awe of the beautiful landscape.

It’s raining, and we decide to snack on some nuts and seeds instead of having a picnic. The good news? The landscape was absolutely worth it. Bad news? We have to retrace our steps all the way back! After 2 kilometers, we realize the return trip is going to be long. Very long. The 3 kilometers of steep descent are murder on our knees. The last 6 kilometers are torture. It’s raining non-stop, our feet hurt, our backs ache, our necks are stiff, and our shoulders are sore. We’re on autopilot.

The sight of the Jeep is a real relief. We quickly open the awning to shelter from the endless fine rain and devour our sandwiches, which loved this 21-kilometer hike in our backpacks… The pleasant surprise at the end of the day: the shower at Sleeping Giant Provincial Park is not just warm or hot, but scalding! 🔥 Pure bliss. The question now is how we’re going to dry all our stuff. There’s no denying it, humidity in a Jeep is the worst.

To console ourselves, once evening comes, we decide to use the heater for the first time on the trip. Finally, a cozy evening in the rooftop tent, warm and dry. The dream.

Tomorrow’s plan? We’re taking it easy! Indeed, it’s time for a rest day in Thunder Bay.
Our discovery of Ontario takes us from the famous and stunning Niagara Falls to Bruce Peninsula National Park. After Lake Ontario and Lake Erie, we arrive at the shores of a third Great Lake in Canada: Lake Huron, with its crystal-clear waters that would make the most beautiful beaches of Bali jealous (and we know what we’re talking about!).

Monday, May 23, 2022

Woke up at 6:30 AM under a brilliant sun and a cloudless blue sky. The day promises to be splendid, and we are eager for new adventures. Today, we’re heading to the Bruce Peninsula, which separates Lake Huron from Georgian Bay. This Great Lake is the third-largest lake in the world, a true inland sea. The Bruce Peninsula National Park is located at the tip of the peninsula. Entry is paid, parking is paid, camping is paid, firewood is paid. There’s plenty to spend a fortune on! Fortunately, we have the annual Parks Canada Pass! Eager to spend a peaceful night, and knowing that it’s almost impossible to find a wild spot on the peninsula, we book a campsite.

🥾 Burnt Point Loop Trail – 5 km (3 miles)

We start with a loop trail that takes us through the peninsula’s forest. Apparently, there are bears, eagles, and rattlesnakes here! We can’t wait to see them… or maybe not 😀. The trail leads us to our first viewpoint over Lake Huron, and we’re left speechless. No one had told us that such places existed in Canada! Incredibly clear water, a white pebble beach, and an inland sea that is actually a lake. Unbelievable!

Perfect! We leave the Jeep there and set off for a second trail.

🥾 Georgian Bay and Grotto Trail – 5 km (3 miles)

This trail takes us to a… heavenly spot. We have no other words, and no one ever said the water has to be warm to make a place paradise! Some brave souls try swimming, but it’s not for us. Water here, too, is incredibly clear. The highlight of the trail, besides the stunning location, is the natural cave.

Back at the campsite, surprise! An infraction notice is stuck to our windshield! We’re “illegally parked.” Now that’s a good one! Our annual pass is hanging from the rearview mirror, and our camping permit is placed on the dashboard… Was the security guy blind or what? We head to the service center to clear up the situation. After inspecting the paper and our multiple documents, the young guy at the front desk, a bit puzzled, informs us that it was a mistake. Thanks for the trip!

Reassured, we head to the restrooms for a hot shower, we hope. With no one in sight, we discreetly slip into the men’s showers together. Well, we only have one bar of soap! The water is lukewarm, but it does the job. At least the facilities are super clean and spacious! With $40 for a night of camping with no services, $15 for park entry, and $12 for parking, we know where the money goes! However, no water wastage here. After five minutes, the water shuts off automatically. Oh no! Rémi is still washing. He presses the button, but nothing happens. We have to admit the water is cut off. They could have at least given us a warning 😆.

The situation makes me laugh so much. I peek my head out of the stall. No one. Discreetly, I move all our stuff to the neighboring shower. After a quick glance left, then right, Rémi, naked as the day he was born, joins me. We burst out laughing. Five minutes later, Monsieur is shampooing his hair and says, “With my luck, watch, the water’s going to cut off.” And bingo! The water shuts off again. We have to change showers once more! Luckily, there’s no one around!

After this eventful shower, we set up our camp. We deploy the rooftop tent and start a fire. We toss a few potatoes into the embers. Our setup impresses the local campers. “Holy shit, what is this?” We proudly show them around. Later in the evening, the security guy comes back! He stops, gets out of his car, and walks onto our campsite. Are we about to get another ticket? Indeed, he’s not happy because we didn’t display our little paper at the entrance of the site. Well, well! That explains our ticket 😒

We enjoy a very pleasant evening by the fire. On the menu: vermicelli soup, <s>baked</s> fire-roasted potatoes, and anchaud fom Périgord! Thank you, Odile and Philippe, for enhancing our humble potatoes with this delicacy!

It is said that Niagara Falls are more beautiful from the American side! A month after discovering Niagara Falls from the Canadian side, we cross the border into the United States to check out this legend and form our own opinion! So, are Niagara Falls more beautiful from the Canadian side or the American side?

Saturday, May 21, 2022

From the Thousand Islands and Kingston, a few hours of driving bring us closer to Toronto. Then, an idea strikes us: why not pass through the city? We don’t plan to make a stop in this vast metropolis, but the thought of getting up close to its towering skyscrapers is tempting. So, we decide to go for it. Instead of taking the highway that bypasses the city to the north, we head toward downtown. And it turns out to be the right call. After a long and tedious approach through the suburbs, we merge onto Toronto’s inner ring road, which takes us high up, right next to Downtown. For a few brief minutes, we weave through these glass giants, completely in awe. Rémi is driving, so I do my best to snap as many shots as possible, hoping to capture a few great pictures of this iconic Canadian city.

This morning, a challenge awaits us: crossing the U.S. land border for the first time and returning safely to Canada. Indeed, we have reached the end of Lake Ontario, where the world’s most famous falls are located: Niagara Falls! We took a trip to Niagara Falls a month ago, accompanied by my mom. At that time, in the midst of renewing our work permits, we couldn’t leave Canadian territory. So, we settled for the Canadian side of Niagara Falls. Today, after two years of administrative procedures, we received our permanent residency on the very day of our departure!! 🥳🥳 As Canadian Residents, we can now come and go from Canada without any issues. Awesome!

At the U.S. border, we encounter a very friendly customs officer. She asks why we are coming to the States and how long we plan to stay. “Only a few hours, we are going to the Falls!” She looks up at the Jeep. “Only a few hours? What’s all this stuff then?” We find ourselves explaining our situation, our two-year journey from Alaska to Argentina. She doesn’t ask any more questions but warns us that the Falls on the American side are much more beautiful than on the Canadian side. Let’s go check that out right away. We are granted a nice three-month visa for the U.S., which we will renew after Alaska.

We take our first steps in the U.S., near Buffalo! There’s no major difference from the other side of the border. However, we now speak in miles instead of kilometers, and liters become gallons. Quite a headache! After many calculations, we realize that gas is 35 cents cheaper than in Canada! So, we rush to the first gas station and fill up 😏

Upon arriving at the Falls, it’s raining! What a shame. Armed with our umbrella, we take a stroll through Niagara Falls State Park. It’s a beautiful, green, and well-preserved park. The contrast is striking compared to the concrete and Disneyland-like atmosphere on the Canadian side! Across the border, we had been surprised by the bustling atmosphere in the city, with its restaurants, attractions, souvenir shops, rides, and entertainment. On the American side, the falls are much more preserved in their natural setting, which is very pleasant. However, the effect remains the same. Just like the first time we stood before the falls, we are blown away by their grandeur and power.

So, the verdict after this second visit to Niagara Falls: are they more beautiful on the American side or the Canadian side? Well, although they are undeniably better preserved in their natural environment on the American side, we must admit that the Canadian side offers the best views! Sorry, madam customs officer 😁

After this quick visit to Niagara Falls on the American side, we return to Canada, a bit worried. It’s the first time we’ll be using our residency. We hope there won’t be any issues, especially since it shows my old passport number. At the booth, the customs officer asks where we live while checking our file online. Then, “Oh, you are residents!” We pass through effortlessly, without even going to the customs office. There’s no denying it, residency is awesome! With that, we leave Lakes Ontario and Erie behind, heading north to the third great North American lake: Lake Huron. Three hours of driving through fields and countryside!

After two days in Gatineau Park, we say goodbye to Quebec and start a new chapter of our journey across the Americas: a road trip in Ontario! Indeed, after three years in Quebec, it’s time to explore other Canadian provinces, starting with Ontario and its great lake of the same name.

Friday, May 20, 2022

Our day starts at the most beautiful spot we’ve stayed at so far. Sure, it’s only our fourth night on the road, but it still counts! We parked on a vast grassy area by a border lake, where we can wave to our American neighbors. In summer, this place is a campground, but since it’s off-season, we can stay for free. Pretty sweet. We spent the night lulled by the sounds of wild geese and other birds, so peaceful.

This is exactly the kind of place where we could stay for days, but the road awaits! A quick water refill, and we’re off!

After stopping at Tim Hortons to use the Wi-Fi, and then at McDonald’s because the Wi-Fi is better 😵, we can finally head towards the Thousand Islands, an archipelago of some 1,800 small and large islands located on the St. Lawrence River. We’ve been following it since Montreal, but we’re about to leave it for good, as the Thousand Islands are situated at the mouth of the immense Lake Ontario. We drive along the road that follows the river, impressed on one side by the properties with perfectly manicured lawns, and on the other by tiny islands that still house a home! It’s a strange idea to build a house on a rock that the slightest wave could submerge!

Our road trip in Ontario takes us to the mouth of the St. Lawrence River and Lake Ontario, where the city of Kingston is located. With its strategic position, Kingston was the first capital of Canada. There are numerous fortifications here, including Fort Henry, which is, however, closed. Well, at $20 per person for entry, it’s not certain we would have gone anyway…

For tonight, we set up camp in a park near the city, Ontario Park. Off-season, it seems allowed to stay overnight, and we find a spot by the water. Restrooms, picnic tables, and most importantly, showers! Excited, we head off to take our first real shower… which is cut short because the water is freezing! Might as well just jump into the lake 😂. Nevertheless, it still feels good to wash up, even with cold water. In the evening, we cook our dinner and do the dishes under the astonished eyes of passersby. Jeepy always makes an impression! We spend the evening working on the blog in the back of the Jeep, sheltered from the wind, sipping our evening tea. Next to us, our neighbors for the night, comfortably settled in their RV, seem to be taunting us 😁.

Saturday, May 21

Wake up at 6:30 AM. Everything is quiet, and the weather is nice. We immediately pack up and go for a walk in Kingston, where we grab some coffee and muffins. When the city was founded, the founders must not have been very inspired. Indeed, the main streets are named “Queen Street,” “King Street,” and “Princess Street.”

At 9 AM, we hit the road again. We follow the small roads along the lake, as we love admiring the beautiful properties, stunning houses, and perfectly manicured gardens, though devoid of any trees. I guess trees aren’t very practical for lawn mowing! After a short ferry ride, we arrive at Sandbanks Provincial Park.

On the shores of Lake Ontario, this park has a bit of a South of France vibe. “It’s like home, but without the sea breeze,” says Rémi. A sandy beach, plenty of pines, and all we’re missing are the cicadas to feel right at home!

We then continue our road trip in Ontario towards Toronto, avoiding the highways. The small country roads are so much prettier and more enjoyable. We drive slowly, admiring the scenery and the beautiful properties we never get tired of. Behind us, the Canadians are getting impatient. We should put a “slow travelers” sticker on the back of Jeepy! 😅 Now, we’re heading towards one of the most famous places in the world: the legendary Niagara Falls!
